Forty Years
in the Making

It started with freshman orientation at the University of Chicago in September 1983. A friendship. Then something deeper. Now more than four decades later, John and Cynthia are inviting the people who matter most to celebrate with them — on a cruise through the Alaskan wilderness.

They got engaged at the park behind Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry in May 1986. Married in August 1987, right after graduating — and they've been building a life together ever since.

Seventeen years in Michigan. Four children — Lauren, Linnea, Lydia, and John III. Graduate degrees, church family, treasured friendships, meaningful careers. In 2004, Pittsburgh became home. And through all of it, their marriage has reflected what happens when two very different people commit to God and to each other.

In August 2027, they'll mark 40 years. And they want you there — not for a ceremony or a production, but just because you're part of the story.

Things You're
Probably Wondering

Is there a vow renewal or ceremony?

No — this isn't a formal ceremony or event. John and Cynthia just want the people they love with them on this trip. Come to celebrate, explore, and enjoy Alaska together.

Do I have to book through a specific agent?

Yes — this sailing is booked through our travel advisor, Cameron DeJong, so your booking stays connected to our group. Questions before booking? Reach out to Cameron directly (contact info below).

What if I've never cruised before?

This is a great first cruise. Virgin Voyages is modern, relaxed, and easy to navigate. The ship handles everything — you just show up and enjoy it.

Can I bring my kids?

Unfortunately no — Virgin Voyages is strictly adults-only (18+), with no exceptions for any sailing.

What's the weather like in June?

Expect mild temperatures — typically 55–65°F in port. It can be cool and rainy. Pack layers. The scenery is stunning regardless of the weather.

Do I need a passport?

Yes — the itinerary includes Prince Rupert, Canada, which requires a valid U.S. passport for re-entry. Make sure yours is valid well beyond June 2027.

What about flights to Seattle?

You'll arrange your own flights to and from Seattle. The ship departs at 5:00 PM on June 17 — plan to arrive in Seattle at least a day early to give yourself buffer time.
